Rock 3 Patch Notes — March 3, 2025
Aggregated from Steam, cross-tracked with Battle.net coverage on GamePatchNote.
A major step forward in realistic world generation

The new tectonics and erosion simulations work together to create believable and detailed environments, perfect for creators who want their worlds to feel authentic and scientifically grounded.
Incoming Major Changes
Advanced Tectonic Simulation
- Realistic plate tectonics for up to 5 billion years of simulation
- Mountains and continental crust forms naturally through plate collisions and subduction orogeny
- Organic supercontinent cycles and continental/oceanic equilibrium
Comprehensive Erosion System
- Realistic water flow and sediment transport
- Hydraulic and thermal weathering with variable rock hardness
- Temperature-dependent glacial erosion
Updated Climate Modeling
- Köppen–Geiger climate classification
- Complete seasonal weather patterns
- Realistic ocean currents and heat transport
Worlds
- Maximum quality/resolution of worlds massively increased (up to 4.95 million cells), scaling with GPU RAM
- Output map resolution increased to 8K (or maximum resolution supported by GPU)
- Galaxies are now realistic instead of stylized
UI improvements
- Most sliders now have values with units mapping to real physical properties
- Tooltips added to explain what toggles and sliders do (tooltips appear in bottom left when mouse is over options)
- Mouse controls explained (hover over icons in top left)
This update is not compatible with existing Rock3 worlds, and will no longer support the existing simplified instantaneous workflow.
I am aiming to release this update as soon as possible, ideally within the next week or two. The only thing remaining is testing and tuning for AMD GPUs and older machines.
