Malkin Patch Notes — April 27, 2024
Aggregated from Steam, cross-tracked with Battle.net coverage on GamePatchNote.
This is a major update. It brings a new, challenging game mode to Malkin, a new class, and new music, as well as many other exciting tweaks and changes. Many thanks to Bringitdon's Let's Play for the issues he caught and the inspiration.

NEW FEATURES
- Survival Mode: Enabling survival mode via the main menu's Extras button will keep your character from recovering maximum HP and SP after every battle. The mode also comes with an exclusive foraging system that can help a canny witch survive a little bit longer.
- Achievement: Survival of the Witchest*: If you get either the best good ending (or the best bad ending) with survival mode enabled, you get what is probably Malkin's most challenging achievement.
- Class: Witch of the Tabor: A witch with three lores (Folk Magic, Natural Philosophy, and Swordplay) who draws SP from Charisma and levels faster than other witches. But watch out: they have bad defenses.
- Spring Portraits: Players with the DLC already sort of had spring portraits; now they have a choice between a gloomy spring day by a river and a sunny spring day (but in a graveyard).
- Spell: Pavin of the Koi: An area effect, multi-element damage and debuff spell that targets Will and makes enemies worse fighters
- Two Answers to the 7 Questions: There's one (possibly two, depending on your build) new responses available in the Seven Questions portion of character creation, as well as new connected dialog later in the game.
- Items: Grand Philtre, Strings of the Popinjay, Lily Lyre: A potion that paralyzes enemies and two new musical instruments
- Four Songs: They are: Witch of the Tabor (Main Menu version), The Waterfall, Meeting at the Crossroads, and Witch of the Tabor with vocals (stick around at the Bonnyjoy long enough and you'll hear this one). There's a fifth new track on the Steam soundtrack that isn't in the game, Witch of the Tabor (Sweet Anime Credits B-Side).
- PDF Reference Map: Players can now access a PDF version of the Map of the Woods by pressing M while exploring. (Previously, M pulled up the saved game menu. Now L does that.) The PDF won't give you your current position, but if you just want to refer to the map without going into your inventory, you can.
- Tangentially Related Creation of Author: In Malkin's docs folder, you'll find a PDF map of the broader region. It represents the lands of Dudow hundreds of years before the events of Malkin.

IMPROVEMENTS
- Added a message that triggers after a consumable is used in battle. This indicates that the consumable has been used and that the player needs to choose a valid target for it. This should make it better understood that the player can't cancel out of consumable use.
- Spells during character creation and leveling up are now listed in order of cost (lowest to highest). Before, the order was pretty random.
BALANCE
- Added the Fast property to certain items musical instruments and daggers. Fast items can be equipped in battle without consuming the player's turn.
- The Mace of the Gold Knight's maximum bonus damage from Strength has been reduced to 0. Getting a free Wallop (5-9 damage) on any successful hit is very powerful already. (DLC Only)
- Many mid-tier and elite enemies have had their attack bonuses bumped up to serve as better threats for high-level, well-equipped characters.
- Experience rewards have been universally increased. Characters will level up more quickly. (Added May 5.)
BUG FIXES AND OTHER ADJUSTMENTS
- A tutorial conversation was missing. It's been restored.
- Eldest Lady wouldn't recognize a character with Hauntings in two special instances. Now she will. (DLC only)
- Many typos have been fixed. Thanks Bringitdon!
- Several small stylistic and consistency revisions
- The endgame storyline is more flexible (the player can now complete the final stage of an important quest line on the last day; thanks Bringitdon!)
- The endgame storyline now disposes of an important quest item if the player didn't do so before the last day
- Descriptions for Constitution and Wisdom have been changed to discuss how these things affect survival mode
- Added new items to some treasure tables and Sieben's shops
- Battles in the cairn didn't have pre-battle advice. Now they do. Thanks Bringitdon! (DLC only)
- The Redcappe Knight looked a little pixelated (well, more pixelated than normal) and, I have completely redrawn her. (DLC only)
