Game Design Changes: Save system overhaul, no more permadeath
Killer Bean Patch Notes — June 10, 2026
Aggregated from Steam, cross-tracked with Battle.net coverage on GamePatchNote.
Hi everyone! I've read your comments and reviews, and I'm going to make some big changes to the save system in the next update:
OLD SYSTEM:
Easy = 5 lives, Normal = 3 lives, Hard = 1 life
When the player loses all lives, the campaign ends and saves are deleted. (bad idea, makes people angry)
NEW SYSTEM:
All difficulties will have 3 lives, but varying Enemy Health and Enemy Damage multipliers
All missions start with 3 lives. So if you are down to 1 life after Mission 2, then on Mission 3 you start with 3 lives again.
Save System only saves on Mission Complete. So if you complete Mission 2, your save file will load Mission 3 next.
But, if you lose all your lives during a mission, when you reload the save file, it loads from the beginning of that mission again. So you must finish the mission within those 3 lives in order to progress to the next mission.
DEATH CHANGES AND LOOT:
I'm going to make it so when you die, you drop all items except for the default Gold Guns. So any Weapons, Gun Mods, or Biohacks will be dropped at the same position where you died. A loot marker will show on the map where you dropped all your stuff, if you want to pick them up again.
CITY SHOP CHANGES:
That means, City Shop prices will be cheaper, because you can lose all your stuff. You can try stealing stuff from the Shop, but that will activate the Shop's security team. If you die when visiting the Shop, you drop all items and you can either go pick them back up, or just proceed to the next mission without your stuff. Eventually the more times you steal from the shop, the security teams will get tougher and tougher, but this is not implemented yet. Like I want a helicopter to chase your ass down if you steal from the shop 3+ times.
NO MORE ROGUELITE:
This also means I will be removing the Roguelite/Action Roguelike tags from the store page. It's now more of a procedurally generated campaign.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
What are your thoughts? If you like these changes, I'll have an update in about 5-6 hours after I test it. Just let me know before I commit the changes. Thanks everyone!
BTW, I'm constantly doing bug fixes. Some of the bugs were quite embarrassing and I apologize for that. You can check out the past Hotfixes here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1597080/eventcomments/
The next Hotfix will fix mouse sporadic glitches and also the soft lock in Mission 1.
