Introducing the New Battle Snails
Battle Snails Patch Notes — March 25, 2026
Aggregated from Steam, cross-tracked with Battle.net coverage on GamePatchNote.
It's been a long journey since we first launched Epic Snails back in 2017. What started as a free-to-play experiment has grown into something we're incredibly proud of, and now we're ready to take the next big step. We're excited to introduce Battle Snails, a premium game built from the ground up for one thing: pure, unfiltered fun with your friends.
Why the Change?
Many of you know and love Epic Snails. It was free-to-play, it was scrappy, and it had heart. But free-to-play comes with tradeoffs. A lot of our energy went into systems that weren't about the actual gameplay: stores, monetization loops, retention hooks. The reality is that free-to-play is a live service model, and running a live service takes a massive amount of resources. It means constant content cycles, server costs, and a team built around keeping metrics moving rather than making a great game.
That's not who we are. We're a small indie studio, and we want to stay that way. We don't have the overhead of a big publisher, and we don't want it. What we do have is a passionate team that loves this game and wants to keep making it better.
By switching to a low-cost premium model, we can do exactly that. Instead of chasing the demands of a live service, we can focus on building meaningful updates every year. New maps, new items, new features, all on a sustainable schedule that works for a small team. The premium model lets us pour everything into what matters most: the gameplay. No distractions. Just great snail-on-snail tank action.
Built for Friday Nights
Battle Snails is the kind of game where someone drops a link in the group chat and twenty minutes later everyone's in. It's cheap enough to grab on impulse, easy enough to pick up without a tutorial, and chaotic enough that every match turns into a story you'll be retelling all week.
The core of what made Epic Snails special is still here: the unique wall-climbing mechanic that lets you defy gravity, hang upside down, and battle from every angle. Snails stick to surfaces, and that changes everything about how you think about a tank battle. Every wall is a floor. Every ceiling is an ambush point. One moment you're lining up a clean shot, the next your friend drops off the ceiling behind you. It's the kind of beautiful chaos that only happens when you're playing with your people.
What's New
We now have a small dedicated team and we have been hard at work:
A completely updated codebase. Our number one priority was making sure Battle Snails runs beautifully on all modern machines. We've rebuilt the code so everything just works, whether you're on PC, Mac, or Linux.
Full controller support. Grab your favorite gamepad and play. Battle Snails works seamlessly with console controllers, Steam Deck, and the new Steam Machine. Couch gaming is very much encouraged, and with Steam Deck, you can take the battle on the road.
A brand-new map. We've added a fresh battlefield to the mix, with more maps planned for the future. New terrain means new strategies, new hiding spots, and new ways to surprise your opponents.
Items are coming. In the next version, we'll begin rolling out our full inventory of items and decorations. Customize your snail, make it yours, and look good doing it.
What's Next
This is just the beginning. We're committed to growing Battle Snails with new maps, new items, and continued updates. The premium model means every update we make is focused on one thing: making the game more fun for you and your friends.
If you played Epic Snails, thank you. You helped us get here. And if you're brand new, welcome to the backyard. Create a snail, grab some friends, and join the battle.
