achievement_unlocker
Hello Folks.
As you probably already know, I recently announced this game was dead and revealed my plans to remove it from Steam since I have now released the significantly better version "TableTop Soccer: Redux".
When I announced that I was going to remove it, there was a sudden surge of people interested in getting this game. I explained the game is functionally dead, since my online server for this game no longer runs and you cannot load the game without that server (which incidentally is one of the many, many things I improved in the new game).
It seems that most people were buying the game for three reasons
It has trading cards (which still work if you just run the game for long enough you should get them)
It has 20 achievements to collect
Adding a title your collection of games
While you can get the cards by just leaving it running for a bit, since the game no longer plays you cannot get any achievements. At least, until today.
At the request of the community here, I have added a new branch to the game called "achievement_unlocker". If you swap to that branch and run the game, you will get a very simple screen with some text and 2 buttons. Click the Unlock All Achievement buttons, it should take about 20 seconds and they will all be unlocked. I have tested this myself on PC, and had a friend confirm it worked for them. However I have not been able to test this for Mac or Linux. It should work, but if you have problems LMK and we can figure it out.
If you don't know how to swap branches, it's super easy:
Right click "TableTop Soccer" in your game list
Select "Properties"
Goto "Game Versions & Betas"
Select the branch "achievement_unlocker"
The game will now update to that branch in a couple mins, just run the game.
Click the button when it launches to unlock everything
What now for this game?
This game is dead! However, I did promise the community I would make an honest attempt to make it possible to run the old game by getting the server code out there in a way that you can run it on your PC (a Docker image is my current plan). I haven't had a chance to do this yet, but sometime in the next month or two I will give this a go one rainy saturday afternoon. Before I do this though I have to get some way more exciting updates out for the new game! I also make no promises this is even possible, but I said I would try, and I will do so.
One More Thing (if you got like 30 more seconds)
You probably only picked up this game since it's super cheap (and always has been) and you get cards & achievements. You probably never actually got to play this game in the 10 years I kept the online servers going.
There were a couple things that I think were universally agreed on by people that did play it though.
It was a good idea/concept. It's an original take on football/soccer
It was super fun to play against a friend online
The implementation / interface / graphics were all janky as hell (it was my first game, I didn't know what I was doing).
This is why I made the new version of this game, to take that same idea but make it slick. To fix all the technical issues that held it back (like needing a server I have to maintain to play). To make the gameplay more fun. I put a ton of effort it making it a fun game, and while I'm super bias - it's awesome! Compared to this old one, its like a Ford Model 1 and a 1998 Toyota Camry.
This is TMI for random people on the internet, but it's quite depressing from my POV that since I released the new game a few weeks ago, I have sold more copies of this old / non functional version. I get that most people are buying it to get the cards (and now the achievements) but if you read this far down this post, you are probably the kind of person that might consider trying the new game and supporting it's continued development.
Bottom line, I would appreciate if you could take a took at the store page for the new game and check it out. The launch sale has ended now, but I will be taking part of future steam sale events. So if it's something you might consider picking up in the future, chuck it on your wishlist. I would deeply appreciate your support, your feedback, your requests and ideas for what you want to see in the game.
Thanks.
Joe
