Big update in 2024
Great Battles of Carolus XII Patch Notes — November 20, 2023
Aggregated from Steam, cross-tracked with Battle.net coverage on GamePatchNote.
Guds fred soldat i ledet!
A big update for GBOCXII is set to be released in 2024.
In this update, the battlefield grid has been changed from hexagon-based to square-based to allow for more aesthetically pleasing and correct formations. Attacking and movement have also been altered to consume varying amounts of access points (AP) depending on the terrain, such as roads, forests, and hills. In addition, a variety of new uniforms for officers, drummers, pipers, Russian streltsy, and more have been added. All these new units, along with the existing ones, are now positioned in more historically accurate formations. Multiple hours of background music have also been added.
Important note: There is a bug that causes freezing in the current version of the game on Steam.
Update, 26th of September:
Unfortunately, my work on the update will only resume in the beginning of November because of my current study/work situation that leaves little free time.
Updated list of additions, 5th of june:
- Approximately 100 new unique uniforms for all regiments and countries.
- Over 100 hand-edited historical banners and pennants for all three countries, based on Olof Hoffman’s depictions. They are carried by individual soldiers and fly over the formations.
- Custom animations and uniform variations for drummers, trumpeters, officers, and non-commissioned officers.
- In-game historical battlefield commanders (e.g., Karl XII).
- Over 300 “semi-realistic” faces for soldiers from various countries, hand-edited with different hair and beards depending on the country.
- More than 1000 new voice lines in Swedish and German, most offering variations of previous voice lines.
- Enhanced troop formations to increase historical accuracy, particularly for Sweden.
- A new division of soldiers in terms of numbers. I have a specific rationale behind how the soldiers have been divided this time to strike a balance between historical accuracy and gameplay.
- Extensive new equipment, such as 'gulyay-gorod' (walking forts) for the Streltsy and separate units for feldshers and priests with wagons, partially using original 17th-century drawings as textures. Additionally, various conquerable tents stocked with supplies or weapons have been introduced.
- Height differences in terrains, including updates to how forts and walls look and can be stormed.
- New animations, particularly for the Streltsy, focusing on interactions between new weapon types like the bardiche, musket, and sword. Old animations have been revised.
- Several distinctive drum rolls for various regiments on the battlefield. A unique composition for the Victory at Narva March has been created from scratch. Shout-out to CWGRAND on Spotify for this great composition. Additionally, 70 new tracks of epic game music have been added that are NOT historical.
I still need to make adjustments and conduct extensive testing to ensure everything functions flawlessly as the game has been redesigned from the core. There is also a consideration regarding the increase in the game's file size :) I am committed to releasing the complete update once I am fully confident that everything has been thoroughly tested and is functional.
